Streetview FAQs

What is this about?

We’ve provided an interface to Google’s streetview on mapofstrange.com.  It will be a comprehensive gallery of strange, interesting and fun things on Google maps Streetview.  Eventually anyway.

How do I add something?

To open the form to add a record, click on the link on the right hand side of the map.  This will generate a form that you can use to add a record.  Then if you browse to where you want to look, zoom in, rotate the camera, then fill in the form, it will add the record.  At the moment entries will be added immediately.  But soon, they will be subject to verification.  We’re allowing everything to be added at the moment to generate some content.

Why isn’t there anything decent there?

It’s very early days and we haven’t been able to add everything of interest yet.  We’ve added a few things, mainly things that are in the main mapofstrange site.  We were going to add everything from these cities that have been added to mapofstrange, but this didn’t really work as it showed a different perspective and the images were taken on a different day, and many weren’t even on a place where the streetview cameras could get to.

But what’s there is a start.  As time progresses more entries will be added, and the quality of entry will improve.  So come back soon!

How do I look at a different city?

The dropdown menu shows you just about all the cities that Google has mapped to the Streetview.  there are 47 cities in there at the moment, ranging from huge metropolises (New York, LA), through to smaller towns (Juneau, Spokane).  You can even look at Yosemite National Park.  We might have missed a city - if we have please let us know (email paul@mapofstrange.com).

The list defaults to New York, but you can select any one of the other cities by choosing it’s name from the list.

How do I find other entries?

The map is setup to show the latest 20 entries added in that city.  You can browse and see more, by clicking on the next/prev buttons on the list of entries.  You can click on the title of an entry to view it.  The entries are shown on the map by a flag , and you can click on the flag to see what the entry is about.

You will notice that the  icon should also move around with you - to let you know exactly where on the map you are.  Wherever you see  - that’s you!  So browse around and it will show you what’s nearby.  This might not be the best way to navigate, so if you have any more ideas, let us know.

Something doesn’t seem to be working.  How do I let you know?

Even if it does work, but you can think of a way of improving the site, we’d like to know about it.
