Frequently asked questions about MapOfStrange.com:

What is it?

The MapOfStrange website is a way of recording strange, wacky, weird and wonderful anomalies, sights and oddities from Google Maps and Google Earth. If you have found something a bit unusual or interesting, we would like to know. Whether someone has written something in a corn field, or there is an aeroplane flying over rural England, it doesn’t matter - we just want to see it.

I’ve found something, how do I add it?

Just find the place in our map, click on the map where the strange or interesting thing you’ve found is, and complete the form to tell us about it!  We need your name, a title for the entry, a brief description (this can be one or two words, or a long paragraph), and some keywords.

How do the keywords work?

The keywords are used to categorise the entries in MapOfStrange.com, so be as specific as possible, and put as many entries in as possible to help your entry get noticed.  Your keywords should be a comma-seperated list of words related to the entry.  They might include the country it was found in, the type of entry it was (ie a map error, or a UFO) or a one or two word description of the item.

I’ve added something but it isn’t showing - why not?

Unfortunately, we don’t add everything and those that we do add don’t get shown straight away.  Instead we have to verify everything that is added to make sure that the quality of links isn’t diluted by people adding things that aren’t very interesting.  The problem is that we’re getting lots more people telling us where they live, and where Brazil or India or Spain is.  That isn’t very interesting, and won’t get accepted.  we also won’t accept anything that has already been added - try using the comments instead.

How long will it take to approve my entry?

We try and approve every entry as soon as possible.  This usually occurs most weekdays, but we can’t guarantee the times or days when this will happen.  You should check back after a week to ten days to see if your entry has been accepted.

I really like one of the entries, how do I give it the thumbs up?

It is possible to rate an entry (both positively and negatively).  Just click on the entry, then click on the tick (I like it) or cross (I don’t like it) icons to vote for that entry.  You can sort by the ratings these entries have recieved rather than the default date order.
